FROM DIFFUSER:

Ajay Kalia’s study found that while teens’ listening is almost entirely consumed by popular artists, those tastes begin to drop off in their 20s. By their 30s, listeners are fairly far removed from popular music and remain steadfast in those tastes from there on out (save for a small dip back toward pop music in listeners early 40s, which could attest for a somewhat renewed interest).

“Even in the age of media fragmentation, most young listeners start their musical journey among the Billboard 200 before branching out,” Kalia writes of the data.

My dad’s told me no good music has been made since 1983. That was the year before he hit 30. They grow up so fast.

In all seriousness, he did introduce me to the likes of The Beattles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and lots of great bands I didn’t grow up with.

And I grew up with great bands like AC/DC, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Foo Fighters and tons more.

And I work at a rock station that plays a pretty decent mix of the old guard and the future. As of this writing, Zac Brown Band(!) has the number one rock song in the country. We play them, Foo Fighters, Offspring, The Pretty Reckless and a whole bunch of other bands that don’t sound like the other.

What about you? Do you still finding new music appealing? Yes or no? – Mike
